Police arrest suspected serial killer in Cross River forest

Security operatives in Cross River State have arrested Akaniyene Eretus, a suspected serial killer, after discovering multiple shallow graves containing human remains in a forest community in Odukpani Local Government Area.

The arrest followed intelligence linking Eretus to the disappearance and murder of recent victims. A joint operation involving the Nigerian Army, tactical police operatives, community youths and local leaders tracked him to an isolated hut he had built in the Abanyama area of Ukim Ita Community, Creek Town. When he noticed the approaching security team, Eretus tried to flee deeper into the forest but officers overpowered him before he could escape.

Etetus, an indigene of Obot Akara, had reportedly constructed the hideout in a secluded part of the forest to carry out his alleged crimes away from prying eyes. The location offered him cover and isolation, making it easier to operate without detection for what investigators say was an extended period.

A search of the compound uncovered about eight shallow graves. Several of the graves contained multiple bodies, many of them buried without their heads. Investigators observed that plantain crops had been deliberately planted over the burial sites, an apparent effort to conceal the graves and avoid raising suspicion in the community.

During preliminary interrogation, Eretus confessed to involvement in numerous killings and led investigators to the burial sites where decomposing remains were exhumed. The exact number of victims remains unclear as investigations continue.

Cross River State Police Command spokesperson SP Sunday Akata confirmed the arrest and disclosed that a second suspect, 35-year-old Uduak Essien, was also arrested in connection with the case. Her role in the alleged crimes is still being determined.

Akata said both suspects remain in police custody while investigators work to establish the full extent of the alleged crimes, identify all victims and determine whether additional accomplices were involved. He assured residents that the command would conduct a thorough investigation and ensure all those found culpable face justice.

The discovery has sent shockwaves through Odukpani and neighbouring communities, raising fresh concerns about security in rural forest areas where criminals can operate with minimal oversight. Community leaders are expected to work with police to identify any missing persons who may be among the exhumed remains.
