Gunmen attacked Mbasa community in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State on Tuesday morning, killing one resident and burning several houses before fleeing the scene.
Troops from Sector 1 and operatives of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards responded to a distress call around 8:30 am on June 4. By the time security personnel arrived at the community in Utange Council Ward, the attackers had already disappeared.
Investigators found two spent 7.62mm cartridges at the scene, confirming that firearms were used in the assault. The dead resident's remains were handed over to family members, who buried him following local customs.
Military sources said the attack left residents devastated, with multiple houses set ablaze. Security authorities have reinforced patrols in and around Mbasa to prevent further incidents and restore confidence among residents.
The incident reflects a broader security crisis in Katsina-Ala and other parts of Benue State, where armed militia groups continue to terrorise communities. Residents face repeated threats from gun violence, and Tuesday's attack underscores the scale of the problem.
The Benue State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, could not be reached for comment as of the time of this report. Military authorities said they are continuing investigations to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
