Stella Jean transforms Haiti football jersey into haute couture statement

Haitian-Italian designer Stella Jean has created L'Haitiana, a series of hand-stitched football jerseys for Haiti's national team that blur the line between sportswear and high fashion, each piece a deliberate statement about cultural identity and national pride.

The collection features two primary designs. The first pairs a deep burgundy athletic polo with "HAÏTI" in white block letters across the chest, layered with a voluminous black-and-white dotted jacquard peplum that flows into a cream-and-black zebra stripe pencil skirt. Oversized bright orange tassel earrings and pointed-toe kitten heels with red-and-white textile straps complete the look. The second design starts with a royal blue jersey trimmed in orange and white, then adds a white lace midi skirt with multi-tiered flounced peplum and a red-and-white checkered waistband. The sheer open-weave lace reveals a woven illustration of a traditional Haitian figure carrying a basket, a detail that demands closer inspection.

Jean describes the collection as a love letter to Haiti, with every hand stitch carrying intention around education, empowerment, and cultural pride. The number 26 on the back marks a year of rebirth, and the jerseys celebrate Haiti's return to football's biggest stage after 52 years away. She said: "From one of the most fragile peripheries of the map, l'Haitiana's jersey steps into the spotlight, not with the backing of great capitals, but with the quiet strength of its culture and purpose."

This is not Jean's first time using sport as a platform for Caribbean storytelling. Earlier this year, she created hand-painted uniforms for Haiti's historic debut at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. Every uniform was painted by hand, making them the only one-of-a-kind pieces at the Games. She drew on the work of Haitian artist Edouard Duval-Carrié, featuring a riderless red horse galloping through lush tropical foliage across each design.

Jean's approach transforms athletic wear into wearable art that speaks to Haitian heritage and national moment. The L'Haitiana collection will dress Haiti's football delegation, turning the pitch into a runway where fashion, sport, and cultural narrative converge.
