Hollywood filmmaker Sam Raimi is in talks to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Raimi is known for helming the first Spider-Man trilogy which starred Tobey Maguire as the web-slinging superhero.
Scott Derrickson directed Doctor Strange back in 2016 and was attached to also do the same with the sequel but departed the project as Marvel cited creative differences as the reason.
A new report indicates that Sam Raimi is currently in negotiations to continue the story of Stephen Strange and should it happen, it would mark Raimi’s return to the superhero genre for the first time since 2007 when Spider-Man was released.
Talks have it that Marvel Studios is not changing the story so a new script being written is out of the question. With production intended to begin in May 2020, the project might have just found its director in Raimi.
Interestingly, both Derrickson and Raimi have done movies in the horror genre and with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness teased to contain a little of the frightful content, it’s no surprise that Marvel is looking to Raimi to replace Derrickson.
Details on the direction of the plot for the sequel are still being hidden but we do know for a fact that Benedict Cumberbatch is on board to return as the mystic doctor, with Chiwetel Ejiofor also set to reprise the role of Mordo. Benedict Wong is also returning in the movie which is being said to be Marvel’s first horror film.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has a release schedule of May 7, 2021.
