Michigan State Spartans guard Tyson Walker has announced that he will be returning to the team as a fifth-year senior in the 2023-24 season.
Walker revealed his decision on his Instagram page on Monday afternoon, providing a significant boost to the Michigan State team that recently made a Sweet 16 appearance. With a strong roster, the program has already secured an early top 10 ranking for the upcoming season.
Last year, Walker led the Spartans in scoring with an average of 14.8 points per game. He demonstrated exceptional skills, shooting 41.5 percent from 3-point range and 45.9 percent from the field, as he transitioned from point guard to shooting guard to assume a more prominent scoring role within the team’s offense.
Walker was responsible for Michigan State’s two highest-scoring individual performances of the season, scoring 31 points against Iowa and 30 points against Purdue. Having played two seasons each at Northeastern and Michigan State, Walker was granted a fifth season of eligibility by the NCAA. This decision followed the COVID-19 impacted 2020-21 season, during which every player was awarded an extra year of eligibility.
With Walker’s return, the Spartans’ starting perimeter is expected to feature Walker, A.J. Hoggard, and Jaden Akins, alongside reserve point guard Tre Holloman. The team will also welcome five-star freshman guard Jeremy Fears Jr. into the fold.
Michigan State now awaits the decision of forward Malik Hall, who is eligible to return for the 2023-24 season but has not yet announced his plans.
