The Federal High Court in Abuja has thrown out a case seeking to bar former president Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election.

The court's decision came after hearing arguments from parties involved in the matter. The suit had challenged Jonathan's eligibility to run, citing constitutional provisions that limit the number of terms a president can serve.

Jonathan, who served one full term as president from 2010 to 2015, had previously indicated interest in running in 2027. His potential candidacy sparked debate about whether the constitutional two-term limit applies to his earlier stint in office, given that he assumed the presidency mid-term following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua in 2010.

The court's ruling clears the way for Jonathan to pursue his political ambitions without the legal impediment of the disqualification suit. However, other potential obstacles, including party nomination processes and general election competition, remain.

The decision comes as several political figures have begun positioning themselves for the 2027 presidential race. Jonathan has not yet formally declared his intention to run, though his moves in recent months suggest serious consideration of the possibility.
