Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has called on religious leaders to sustain prayers for peace, unity and stability in Nigeria before, during and after the 2027 general elections.
Abiodun made the appeal on Wednesday while addressing Muslim faithful at the Lantoro prayer ground in Abeokuta after Eid prayers. He was represented by Senator Shuaibu Afolabi, who represents Ogun Central at the National Assembly. The governor said the state had enjoyed seven years of peace and development through divine support and the prayers of religious leaders.
"The governor has asked me to ask the clerics to pray for him to ensure that the success he has recorded in the last seven years would also be enjoyed in the last one year," Afolabi said. Abiodun's administration will clock seven years in about two days, leaving him with roughly one year left in office.
Abiodun also asked Nigerians to pray for President Bola Tinubu and for a peaceful 2027 election. "He wants you to pray for our president, Bola Tinubu so he can have a successful tenure, and all those vying for one position or the other in Ogun state, that the election will be peaceful and the country will not go into war or be divided but remain united before, during and after the election," Afolabi explained.
The governor used the occasion to call on parents to take more responsibility for raising their children properly. He said a well-brought up child becomes a benefit to the family and the country. "All our youths and citizens of Ogun state, please ensure that the new generation that we are building will be built on Godliness and virtues," he said. The message was delivered on Children's Day.
Abiodun said his administration remains committed to delivering democracy dividends across the three senatorial districts of the state before his tenure ends. The Chief Imam of Egbaland, Sheikh Sa'addallah Bamigbola, who preached during the service, urged Muslims to uphold peace, tolerance, unity and selflessness. He said these values were essential for progress and peaceful coexistence in society.
