Disney Is Making A Sequel To ‘Aladdin’

The second part will not be based on the source material.

Plans for a sequel to ’s Aladdin are in full gear as reports have confirmed a story not based on the animated sequels.

Last year’s live-action adaptation was a success, crossing the billion-dollar mark as fans totally enjoyed the compelling performances of the two leads, bolstered by ’s depiction of the magical Genie.

Directed by Guy Ritchie, Aladdin starred the unknown Mena Massoud as the titular character and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine. Its songs and special effects made it resonate with fans and even though it got mixed reviews, Disney has ordered a sequel.

Variety has reported that the studio has hired John Batins and Andrea Berloff to pen a script for the movie, and according to THR, director Ritchie will return to direct.

The return to the city of Agrabah will not be based on any of the animated sequels. This bit of news is a welcome one as fans will not know where the direction of the plot.

Massoud and Scott’s involvement is assumed to be a done deal at this point and even though Will Smith may have a busy schedule, he should be primed to reprise his role as well.
