A few weeks ago, a movie poster for the French film Cuties went viral for the wrong reasons; it appeared to sexualize underage children.

The movie is now available for streaming on the platform and people are calling for a boycott of the film in the ensuing backlash that it has attracted.

Cuties is about an eleven-year-old girl named Amy who begins to rebel against her conservative family’s tradition when she becomes fascinated with a free-spirited dance group.

Now, the streaming giant has responded to the controversy surrounding the film, saying that it is actually against the sexualization of young children.

In a statement it released, Netflix said:

Cuties is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children. It’s an award-winning film and a powerful story about the pressure young girls face on social media and from society more generally growing up — and we’d encourage anyone who cares about these important issues to watch the movie.”
