Suicide Squad director David Ayer has called the sequel a reinvention.
Suicide Squad (2016) got polarizing reviews and the ensemble cast couldn’t save the movie from being largely disappointing for both fans and critics.
Starring the likes of Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, and Jai Courtney, it revolved around a team of antiheroes who are forced to work together after Superman’s death.
Suicide Squad 2 or The Suicide Squad (its official title) will be directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and a lot of people are counting on him to give them something fresh, much like what he did with the Guardians.
Ayer took to Twitter recently to comment on the upcoming sequel, calling it a reinvention and going as far as to state that Gunn would “knock it out of the park.”
It’s not a sequel it’s a reinvention and @JamesGunn is going to absolutely knock it out of the park. I’m cheering every step a way. https://t.co/MehKt7rvLO

It now falls on Gunn to not fail as the confidence in him should be rewarded with a far better movie than the one Ayer made.
The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Idris Elba, and John Cena. It will be released in the United States on August 6, 2021.
