Joe Dante’s classic horror werewolf comedy The Howling is getting a remake, and Andy Muschietti has been brought on board to help Netflix retell the tale.
Muschietti is no stranger to the horror genre, having directed the hit movies It (2017) and its sequel It Chapter Two (2019). His ability to frighten fans has made him the choice to give the classic tale a makeover.
The director first expressed his wish to make the film in July 2019 and while moderating a panel last night with the cast of the movie Underwater, Muschietti confirmed that after he was done with DC’s The Flash, he would team up with Netflix for a new adaptation of The Howling.
The original film was helmed by Joe Dante based on the book by Gary Brandner. It was released on April 10, 1981, and the official synopsis reads:
A television journalist in Los Angeles named Karen White (Dee Wallace) who is traumatized in the course of aiding the police in their arrest of a serial murderer. Her doctor recommends that she attend an isolated psychiatric retreat led by Dr. George Waggner (Patrick Macnee). But while Karen is undergoing therapy, her colleague Chris (Dennis Dugan), investigates the bizarre circumstances surrounding her shock. When his work leads him to suspect the supernatural, he begins to fear for Karen’s life.
Andres Muschietti is an Argentine filmmaker who rose to fame with the 2013 film Mama. He gained further recognition for making the It movies which were adapted from the Stephen King novel.
He will direct a live-action adaptation of Attack on Titan based on the Japanese manga series by Hajime Isayama.
