“I’ve Never Picked Up A Pen And Paper To Write Songs In My Life” – Burna Boy

Nigerian pop star, Burna Boy (Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu) says he never writes down his songs as music is “a spiritual thing” to him.

Burna Boy made the comment in an interview with The New York Times published on Wednesday.

“I’ve never picked up a pen and paper and written down a song in my life,” he said. “It all just comes, like someone is standing there and telling me what to say. It’s all according to the spirits. Some of us are put on this earth to do what we do.”

The Afrofusion star announced that his fifth studio album- ‘Twice As Tall’would be now be released by August 13.

He disclosed that the album would be executive produced by Sean Combs, aka P. Diddy.

Speaking on the album, the mega-producer, Diddy, said it is “a modern but pure, unapologetic African body of work.”

“The thing that I learned about him is the importance of what he’s doing for his nation and representing the people that aren’t really heard globally,” he said. “Through this album, I think it’s important for Africa to be heard. And so it’s bigger than just an album. He’s not just on a musical artist trip. He’s a revolutionary. His conviction is serious.”

Recall that Burna Boy, after losing out on the Grammy Awards to Angelique Kidjo, announced that his next studio album ‘Twice as Tall’ would be out by July.

“So now I’m ‘Twice as Tall’. That’s the name of my next album, by the way, dropping in July by the grace of the most high,” he had said.

However, after his failure to meet the July schedule, the singer took to his Twitter page on Wednesday to release an explicit video of himself in the studio, in the caption of which he simply wrote, “14/8.”

In June, Burna Boy came through with ‘Wonderful’, a track off ‘Twice as Tall’, before he was recruited by Sam Smith, an English singer, for ‘My Oasis’.

His last album ‘African Giant’ was released in July 2019. It won the Album of the Year at the 2019 All Africa Music Awards and was nominated for Best World Music Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.
