The awards, which honour black excellence in entertainment and sports, were held at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles.

Tems won the ‘Best International Act’ category ahead of Fireboy, and Dave among others.

She also won the ‘Best Collaboration category alongside Wizkid and Justin Bieber for their roles in ‘Essence’, their collaborative hit track.

Tems who was nominated in three categories, however, lost the ‘Best New Artist gong to Latto, the US rapper, born Alyssa Michelle Stephens.

Wizkid lost the ‘Best male R&B/Pop Artist’ category to The Weeknd.

Fireboy was among the star-studded lineup of artists that performed on the night.

Phillip Moses, the Nigerian record producer and singer better known as Pheelz, also performed at the red carpet segment of the event.

This year’s edition of the awards further stretches the impressive run of Nigerian artists at the annual event.

It is understood that the ‘Essence’ win makes it the first African song to clinch a major category at the BET awards.

It also makes Wizkid the first African artiste to win four BET awards.
