Alex Murdaugh, a former lawyer, has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering his wife, Maggie, and 22-year-old son, Paul, in 2021 on the family property in Islandton, South Carolina. Murdaugh was handed two life sentences for the murders and two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
The sentencing took place on Friday, and a few hours after the hearing, Murdaugh was taken to prison and had his head completely shaved. In the original mugshot taken during the hearing, he had a full head of hair. It is reported that it is standard operating procedure for prisoners, so he had no choice in the matter.
Murdaugh had maintained his innocence and had an alibi for the murders but was indicted last summer. However, prosecutors presented video and audio evidence that proved he was on the property moments before the murders. During the trial, Murdaugh admitted to lying to authorities but continued to deny killing his wife and son.
The jury found him guilty on Thursday, after less than three hours of deliberations. The case gained significant media attention due to Murdaugh’s prominent legal background and his family’s connections to the South Carolina legal community.
