Community Leader Arrested for Vandalism at State-Owned Palm Oil Estate

The Police Command of Zone 9 in Umuahia has verified the detention of Mr. Mecha Ume, the President General of the Okon Aku locality within the Ohafia council district of Abia State, for his alleged involvement in the destruction and theft of assets from a state-owned palm oil plantation in the area.

The spokesperson for the Zone 9 Police, Deputy Superintendent Bruno Iheanetu, revealed that Ume, along with another individual apprehended the previous Saturday, is accused of implicating the community’s leader in the incident.

According to a report by Vanguard, initially, three individuals were detained by military personnel from the 14 Brigade in Ohafia for attempting to transport the stolen property from the Palm Estate in a truck. These individuals were then transferred to the custody of the Zone 9 Police for extended inquiries.

Deputy Superintendent Iheanetu further mentioned that the probe into the matter is still active.

The palm oil plantation in question was inaugurated in 1961 by the Eastern Region Estate Investment (EREI) during the leadership of Dr. Michael Okpara, who served as the Premier of the now-defunct Eastern Region.
