President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a powerful address on the 25th anniversary of Nigeria’s unbroken democratic governance during the Democracy Day celebrations on June 12, 2024. Reflecting on the nation’s journey, he honored the sacrifices of key figures like Chief MKO Abiola and his wife, Kudirat, along with many others who fought for democracy.

President Tinubu underscored the importance of democracy, stating, “Democracy is neither a foreign nor abstract concept devoid of real-life meaning for us. It is a way of life that encompasses a broad outlook of which elections are but a part.” He emphasized the significance of holding transparent, open, and fair elections, highlighting the peaceful transitions of government as a testament to Nigeria’s democratic spirit.

Acknowledging the economic challenges faced by the nation, Tinubu spoke on the necessity of ongoing reforms aimed at creating a stronger foundation for future growth. He stated, “The reforms we have initiated are intended to create a stronger, better foundation for future growth. There is no doubt the reforms have occasioned hardship. Yet, they are necessary repairs required to fix the economy over the long run.”

Tinubu also addressed the government’s commitment to negotiating in good faith with organized labor on a new national minimum wage. He assured that an executive bill would soon be sent to the National Assembly to formalize the agreement.

Concluding his speech, Tinubu expressed his dedication to protecting the rights, freedoms, and liberties of Nigerian citizens. He called for unity and continued commitment to the democratic process, saying, “Let us board this progressive train together. Together, let us move Nigeria forward. Let’s continue to keep the fire of democracy burning.”

The President’s speech encapsulated a message of resilience, reform, and hope for the future, reinforcing Nigeria’s steadfast commitment to democratic principles and economic development.
