A soldier died and another was wounded when suspected terrorists ambushed troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo state on May 4.
The attack happened around 12:53 p.m. along the SPDC–Etekuru road, where the soldiers had been sent to inspect a burnt Hilux vehicle. As soon as they arrived, gunmen opened fire. The troops returned fire in what security sources described as a fierce firefight.
When it was over, one soldier lay dead. A second soldier was hit and injured. The attackers fled the scene with two AK-47 rifles and damaged a military vehicle in the process. Military reinforcements were quickly sent to the area, and the gunmen retreated before they could be engaged further.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama broke the news on X on Tuesday. When troops later swept the scene, they found two burnt-out vehicles and the bodies of two people. Both corpses were taken to a hospital morgue for identification and investigation.
The incident marks the latest in a series of attacks on military personnel in the southeast, where armed groups have stepped up operations against security forces in recent months.
