Contrary to recent rumors, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is still on track for its summer release in theaters. According to a source close to the film who spoke with TheWrap, the biographical thriller is set to hit theaters on July 21, 2023, with no plans to change the date.
Speculation about a potential release date delay to the fall began after an interview with Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Femaux. Femaux mentioned that he “would have loved” to include “Oppenheimer” in the festival’s lineup, but mistakenly claimed that the film was “being released at the end of the year.”
As it currently stands, “Oppenheimer” will be released exclusively in theaters on the same day as Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” movie directed by Greta Gerwig. This scheduling sets up a significant box-office showdown, and despite speculation, Universal has no plans to shift Nolan’s film.
Written and directed by Nolan, “Oppenheimer” is an adaptation of the book “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The film tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy, and his role in developing the atomic bomb.
Described as an “epic thriller,” the film chronicles Oppenheimer’s life, with Nolan calling it “one of the most challenging projects” he has ever undertaken. Speaking to Total Film, Nolan emphasized the film’s focus on Oppenheimer’s perspective, stating, “We want to view these events through Oppenheimer’s eyes.”
Shot using IMAX cameras, the production took place in New Mexico, California, and New Jersey. The ensemble cast features Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Rami Malek, Josh Hartnett, and Kenneth Branagh.
