Nigerian music sensation, Naira Marley, has declared his readiness to cooperate with authorities in the ongoing investigation into the tragic demise of his former signee, Mohbad.
However, he emphasized that his willingness is contingent upon the assurance of his personal safety by security agencies.
The music industry was jolted on September 12, 2023, by the untimely death of Mohbad, a former artist under Marlian Records. The circumstances surrounding his demise have prompted widespread speculation and a wave of public outcry, leading to calls for Naira Marley’s involvement in the investigation.
In an exclusive interview with renowned journalist Reno Omokri on Wednesday night, Naira Marley revealed that he had been out of Nigeria since August 31, 2023, and had only learned about Mohbad’s passing through social media.
“I was out of Nigeria from the 31st of August. I’ve been with my family up till date. I haven’t been to Nigeria [since then], that’s one,” Naira Marley stated during the interview.
Furthermore, Naira Marley clarified that Mohbad had left Marlian Music in 2022, and the artist was not hindered from pursuing his music career independently. He disclosed that Mohbad had been working with a public relations firm since his departure from the record label.
Addressing the allegations against him, Naira Marley expressed his shock and distress over Mohbad’s tragic death, stating, “If you’re blaming me, how did I kill him? I have nothing to do with his death or whatsoever. I was so hurt when I heard that. I’ve nothing whatsoever to do with his death.”
Naira Marley concluded by expressing his willingness to return to Nigeria and cooperate with the police in their investigation, but he emphasized the importance of his safety. “I am willing to return to Nigeria to answer questions if the police can guarantee my safety,” he stated.
Additionally, Naira Marley refuted claims of his involvement in any cult or criminal activities, firmly stating, “I don’t belong to any cult. I don’t know what a cult is. I have been running away from all these people. I’m actually anti-cult.”
