Abdulsamad Jamiu, a National Youth Service Corps member, died when bullets from a gunfight between the Nigerian Army and armed robbers caught him in Dei-Dei, Abuja.
Jamiu was caught in the middle of the exchange during an operation against the criminals. The Army was responding to robbery activities in the area when the shooting started. He was not involved in the crime but found himself at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Dei-Dei, a commercial hub in Abuja's Kubwa area, has struggled with robbery and armed banditry. Residents and traders have repeatedly complained about security lapses despite the presence of security agencies. The incident adds to growing concerns about civilian safety during law enforcement operations in the FCT.
The death of the 22-year-old corps member has raised fresh questions about how security forces conduct operations in populated areas. Family members and colleagues are grieving the loss. The NYSC is yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Authorities have not released details on whether the robbers were apprehended or the extent of damage from the operation.
