The charitable gesture is being made through Bad Robot Productions (headed by Abrams) and the Katie McGrath & J.J. Abrams Family Foundation.

In a statement made by Bad Robot on Instagram, the pledge of $10 million was announced. It will be made over a period of five years to various organizations, beginning with $200,000 each to the following groups; Black Lives Matter LA, Black Future Lab, Community Coalition, Equal Justice Initiative, and Know Your Rights Camp.

Part of the statement reads:

Enough is enough. Enough police brutality. Enough outsized privilege. Enough polite conversation. Enough white comfort.”

The centuries-long neglect and abuse of our Black brothers and sisters can only be addressed by scalable investment. Corporate and private philanthropy can never achieve the impact needed to address these systemic inequities, but companies and individuals who are able must do what we can until our political leaders lead.”

The pledge comes on the heels of the nationwide protests that have rocked the United States following the death of George Floyd, a black American, at the hands of a white cop in Minneapolis last week.

The results of the autopsy report released on Monday, June 2, 2020, show that Floyd died of asphyxiation owing to the cutting off of air by Officer Derek Chauvin who kept his knee on the back of his neck.
