iPhone 14 Pro And Pro Max Will Likely Get Always-on Display

Apple might finally introduce always-on screen in the upcoming iPhone Pro and Pro Max. This will allow the phone to stay on even when it is locked. According to a report from Magary, the feature will come with iOS 16 and Apple has already been testing prototypes of the screens.

While iPhones have traditionally used liquid crystals, a new low-power display technology called Low Temperature Polycrystalline OXide (LTPO) could be used in the future. This would make iPhones less power hungry with always-on mode on, reducing their overall power consumption.

Less than a year ago, analysts predicted that the iPhone 13 would come with an LTPO display to enable always-on display. A number of Android devices already support always-on mode — and have done so for many years. On certain Samsung devices, for example, the OLED screen can show time, battery level, widgets, and more while the phone stays locked—at least until it does not anymore.

Gurman expects iOS 16 to come with similar functionalities, including wallpapers with “widget-like capabilities.” Gurman suggests that the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will both only include an A16 chip due to past leaks showing their exclusivity to those two devices.

With the release of its forthcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 6th, Apple is set to announce a number of enhancements that could debut at this event, with some changes likely including enhanced windowing and multitasking features on the iPad. Another prediction from Gurman predicts that Apple will be announcing a feature for users to freely resize windows, which would bring in new audio features in the Messages app. In line with previous findings from Steve Troughton-Smith, Gurman also predicts big changes coming to the Mac system preference menu.

With WWDC approximately a week away, we won’t have to wait much longer to see how many of these predictions come true.
