Lagos shuts Balmoral Centre, Foodies Restaurant over wastewater dumping

Lagos State has sealed Balmoral Convention Centre in Victoria Island and Foodies Restaurant in Lekki Phase 1 for dumping wastewater into public drains without proper treatment.

The closures mark the latest move in the government's push to crack down on businesses that breach environmental rules. State officials have intensified inspections across Lagos, targeting companies that dispose of waste illegally into the city's drainage system.

Balmoral Convention Centre, a major events venue on the island, and Foodies Restaurant, located in the upscale Lekki neighbourhood, both failed to meet wastewater management standards. Rather than treat waste before disposal, both facilities were channelling untreated wastewater directly into public drains, a violation that poses risks to public health and the environment.

The enforcement action reflects growing concern about water pollution in Lagos. Poor wastewater management from commercial establishments has long contributed to flooding and contamination of water sources across the state. Lagos authorities have signalled they will not tolerate such violations, regardless of how prominent or profitable a business is.

Business owners who want their premises reopened will need to install proper wastewater treatment systems and demonstrate compliance with Lagos State environmental regulations. Inspectors will conduct follow-up visits to confirm that facilities have remedied the infractions before seals are lifted.
