The United States made the announcement in a statement issued by Secretary Antony J. Blinken and posted on the website of its embassy in Nigeria on Wednesday.
“We are dedicated to fostering democracy in Nigeria and across the world.”
“Today, I am imposing visa restrictions on particular people in Nigeria for obstructing the democratic process in a recent Nigerian election.
“Under Section 212(a)(3)C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, these people would be judged ineligible for visas to the United States under a policy to limit visas for those believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy in Nigeria.
“Additional people who disrupt the democratic process in Nigeria, including in the lead-up to, during, and following Nigeria’s 2023 elections, may be judged ineligible for U.S. visas under this policy,” he said in part, according to the release.
According to him, the visa limitations stated are just for particular persons and are not meant against the Nigerian people or the Nigerian government. Though the identities of individuals impacted were not published, Blinken stated that the decision to impose visa restrictions shows the United States’ commitment to supporting Nigerian objectives to combat corruption and improve democracy and the rule of law.
