[ODUNEWS] January 18 – According to early reports, Oyo state governor Seyi Makinde would headline Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign rally in Ibadan. Governor Makinde, who is a member of the G5 governors’ clique led by Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, has been embroiled in a bitter rivalry with the PDP’s flagbearer. It was learned that at the occasion, all of the party’s candidates at all levels will be appropriately introduced. Governor Makinde, the G-5 Forum’s young leader, has always emphasised that the party must do the right things in order to reclaim its proper place at the national level, particularly strict adherence to the zoning principle. His stance has splintered the party’s state chapter, with other party leaders saying that only the NEC of the party, not Atiku, has the authority to fire the national chairman, Iyorcha Ayu. With recent developments, however, the party has returned to normalcy, with all parties cooperating. Hazeem Gbolarumi, the ex-deputy governor of Oyo State and an ardent opponent of the incumbent will...

[ODUNEWS] January 17 –INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, addressing on Tuesday at the Chatham House in London, praised the commission’s in-house engineers for the creation of the BVAS and for always coming up with novel ideas and designs to improve the election process.According to him, a commission engineer offered using body odour to authenticate voters, but he had to ask them to wait. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may use body odour for voter verification in the near futureas part of its growing aim to integrate technology into Nigeria’s electoral process. Voters were once confirmed simply by looking at their paper ballots and verifying the voter register. However, in 2012, INEC introduced Smart Card Readers SCR to validate the Permanent Voter Cards PVCs, which carried voters’ faces. During this time, INEC also used the Automated Facial Identification System (AFIS) to purge the voter rolls. As politicians devised ways to circumvent the system, the electoral umpire went a step further by instituting the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which verifies both the facials and the ballots....
[ODUNEWS] January 17 – On Tuesday, the Ondo State Government made a statement regarding the mounting concern over Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s health. According to the administration, it was forced to address the worries and reassure the populace that “by the grace of God, there is no cause for alarm.” According to a statement by Richard Olatunde, the governor’s chief press secretary, Akeredolu experienced health issues like everyone else, but he has received treatment and is quickly recovering. The spokesperson stated that the office’s immunity does not cover mental or physical health and that the principal is not a superhuman. Olatunde pointed out that, in contrast to rumours, the governor is still carrying out his official duties despite his frailty and is not suffering from a terminal illness. The government noted his recent commitments, including last week’s Executive Council and Security Council meetings, where decisions on the escalating violence in Ikare-Akoko were made. “The Governor, who participated in intense campaign activities on January 7th, could not have been bedridden, as commonly thought.” Governor Akeredolu still unveiled a new refrigeration van for the benefit of the state’s meat traders last Friday. ...
