Pandemonium ensued at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Wednesday morning as a fire incident ravaged a section of the airport’s international wing.

According to eyewitness accounts, the fire outbreak was reported in the early hours of the morning, sending alarm bells ringing throughout the airport. Passengers, as well as airport personnel, were evacuated from the terminal building as thick plumes of smoke billowed from the affected area.

The fire also extended its reach to the administrative office of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), adding to the chaos. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties, thanks to the prompt response of emergency services.

Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection for FAAN, issued a statement regarding the incident. He stated, “Promptly responding to the situation, the dedicated firefighters from the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (ARFFS) of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport initiated immediate action.

“Their swift response and professional efforts have successfully brought the situation under control. In accordance with our unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of passengers, staff, and all airport users, the Terminal building was promptly evacuated due to the smoke that had permeated some areas of the facility.

“We are pleased to report that the situation is presently under control. FAAN remains committed to her core values of safety, security, and comfort.”

While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, investigations are already underway to ascertain the origin and extent of the damage. The incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of robust safety measures at busy international airports, and authorities are expected to review and enhance safety protocols to prevent future occurrences.

Passengers are advised to check with the airport for updates on flight schedules and operations as normalcy is gradually restored.
